- <p> DIED. HUGH SCOTT, 93, former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania;
- in Falls Church, Virginia. A moderate Republican who served
- in Congress for more than three decades, Scott was the Senate
- minority leader during the Watergate investigation. He urged
- Richard Nixon to make public the audiotapes of Oval Office conversations,
- believing their disclosure would show the President was innocent
- of a cover-up. When the tapes, released by court order, indicated
- Nixon's involvement, Scott, together with Senator Barry Goldwater
- and House Minority Leader John Rhodes, told Nixon on Aug. 7,
- 1974, that his presidency could not be saved. The next day,
- Nixon announced his resignation.
