  15. <p>     DIED. HUGH SCOTT, 93, former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania;
  16. in Falls Church, Virginia. A moderate Republican who served
  17. in Congress for more than three decades, Scott was the Senate
  18. minority leader during the Watergate investigation. He urged
  19. Richard Nixon to make public the audiotapes of Oval Office conversations,
  20. believing their disclosure would show the President was innocent
  21. of a cover-up. When the tapes, released by court order, indicated
  22. Nixon's involvement, Scott, together with Senator Barry Goldwater
  23. and House Minority Leader John Rhodes, told Nixon on Aug. 7,
  24. 1974, that his presidency could not be saved. The next day,
  25. Nixon announced his resignation.
